America's Library of Congress calls them "defining sounds of history and culture" and "audio treasures worthy of preservation for all time based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage." Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... Weezer!
That's right, Weezer's first album shall be preserved for all time. Acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen now calls them part of "our national playlist," preserving our proud heritage of Weezer "for generations to come.”
America's National Recording Registry has specifically chosen Weezer's debut album, known for its culturally significant works like "The Sweater Song".
The album also features the track "Buddy Holly", best remembered for a music video where the 1990s band combined memories of the 1950s rocker with scenes from the 1970s sitcom Happy Days.
America's National Recording Registry announced they'd induct several other noteworthy American cultural figures. Also preserved for all time shall be the very first album by... The Go-Go's!
You can't make this up! Here's the list! Other culturally significant works being preserved for all time include...
The soundtrack for the videogame Doom
“Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” – Beyonce
“Cocktails for Two” – Spike Jones and His City Slickers
“The Devil Went Down to Georgia” – The Charlie Daniels Band
But of course, it's important to remember that some people take Weezer very seriously... Including Matt Damon!
And so it came to pass that America's acting Librarian of Congress Robert R. Newlen said the institution was "proud to select these audio treasures," and would work closely with the titans of America's recording industry on ensuring the preservation of these irreplaceable works.
Including the irreplaceable works of Weezer!

It’s election night. My wife and I are holed-up in this hotel that my political party has rented out for the evening. Outside, people are being violently beaten for whom they voted for. Is this South Africa? Perhaps we’re in Haiti or some Southern state during the 60’s. Of all the places where this sort of thing happens, it’s mind-boggling that we are in Portland, Maine. (More...)
